The ziggurat of Ur

The ruins of the ancient city of Ur are within the boundaries of our base, and from time to time we are allowed to go on tours. The picture above is of the Great Ziggurat of Ur, taken from the one of the excavated building in the ruins of the ancient city of UR.

Yes ... Mesopotamia is considered to be "the birth place of civilization". On the tour we went on, the archeologist actually pointed out a pit that they were digging out, and measuring soil samples to try to place historical events. He said they found what looks like a flood that probably corresponds to the story of Noah's Ark.

Amazing...love the framing. It's easy to forget that Iraq has so much history to it..I'm glad you're able to appreciate that while you're there, maybe even more so than the people that live there.
