Us weather guys are natural multi-taskers, so when I looked over and saw this scene, I just couldn't resist grabbing my camera and getting the shot. The ironic thing is, we were actually working pretty hard this morning ... even at the time this picture was taken. But even when we're busy, we can usually still find a few minutes to catch up on the news ... or in this case MMA / Boxing results. 
I've been doing this job for 20 years now, and there are definitely times when life can get a little hairy. Especially during bad weather. But over the years, no matter how busy it's gotten, I've always been able to find at least a few minutes during the day in which to "goof off". I think it's a necessary evil. It's hard to concentrate if all you do it work ... gotta give the brain a break from time to time.
As a boss, I try to take the same attitude towards the people who work for me. I'm not a clock watcher, and I'm not a micro manager. I don't really care exactly how someone goes about doing their job, as long as they produce good results.
I do however, have one little pet peeve that I let my guys know about right up front ...
If you don't get a project or task finished, tell the instructions weren't clear, tell me you forgot, heck if you want to be really honest, tell me you just blew it off. But don't EVER, EVER, EVER tell me "I didn't have enough time".

Good one Todd, I reckon that would probably be the first excuse they come up with. We pay our guys above award rates. We know that they can do their job within approx. 30 hours per week but we pay them for 38 hours. We figure this way they appreciate their job and do it properly. It’s amazing though how sometimes when things go wrong and they have a few longer days here and there that they still find time to complain.

I think that’s just human nature. You could ask most people to describe their “ideal” environment … create it for them exactly … and I guarantee within a day, they’d find something to complain about.

That should be the attitude of everybody in a leadership position. Sometimes if we “micro manage” people to much they only provide average (if we are lucky) results because this attitude of “micro managing” prevents them of thinking out of the box and getting actually better results then when everything goes by the book. But I also like: “But don’t EVER, EVER, EVER tell me “I didn’t have enough time”.” Whenever I had people “under me” (what a horrible expression!) I could cope with nearly everything, less lies and cheap excuses. Just my two Czech koruna and Happy and Prosperous New Year to you and your readers, SY
