I’m a weather forecaster in the Air Force, who currently lives at Fort Hood Texas, with my wife Ana (who sells candles) and 5 of our kids. On those rare occasions when I have spare time, I enjoy photography, golf, poker, and spending entirely too much time in front of this silly box.

Hi Todd, thanks for the mention. :) After reading your last post I took down most of my ads. Not because you came out and said, “What are you trying to do here? THINK woman, THINK!”, but because you made me think that. I’m not against trying to reel in some dough for my family, but considering the present state of my blog as mostly a personal one by me and for me, ads really make no sense. I may try my hand at some of the other writing sites like Cheryl Phillips does, or try crafting again, or selling patterns, we’ll see where it goes.

At this point I need to concentrate on honing my writing skills – learning how to be a better, more effective writer, and networking with those who interest me and make me think. I should be focusing less on monetization at this point (that doesn’t include SEO, which is always important) and more on self-improvement via persistence and good old-fashioned plugging away. I will have to consider the time spent as an investment, hopefully leading to some sort of writing career down the road. I will start small, and work my way up. Thanks for reminding me to avoid distractions and keep my eye on the golden ring.

Off to read “Social Media is Overrated” and the err… douchebag one. That word totally cracks me up. It’s very specific in describing a certain type of jerk. Love it. Have a good weekend!

Anyway, thanks for all the great links.

      Hi Erica,

I just read your post “They’re All Going to Laugh At You”. Wow……… I am sooo subscribed.

See Todd? It’ll be your fault if I don’t have time to write posts anymore, cuz I’m too busy reading these other blogs. LOL!

Thanks for the mention Todd! My idea of “less is more” when it comes to blog ads is actually inspired by Lou What-ever-his-name-again from zenhabits. By the look of your blog, you follow the same “zen habit”, perhaps we should call it “blog feng-shui” = how to design your blog to attract business, SY

Todd, we are more similar then you think: “creating a few good solid relationships with like minded people, will be much more valuable than any affiliate commissions I might be able to earn” Yes!
“I only want you to see those sites if you arrive via a search engine” Double yes!

Your right Todd, that wasn’t my intention at all. I was actually quite surprise by the stir it caused. Strange that I wasn’t notified of this post, not even a trackback, lucky you left a comment on my blog, and commentluv did the rest.

It’s good that you share the good stuff mate, and it’s obvious that you spend a lot of time on the net gathering this stuff, time that I’m sure David would tell you is better spent making money ;)

Still, you are providing a service, and once people realize this, that can only be a good thing. Knowing you, I’m sure you’re also leaving quality comments at all of those sites and that is a great form of marketing.

I found the controversy with Sire and Risley and the like recently too. It seems as if the “A-listers” who preach the value of social media, have somehow forgotten the very basic premise of it, and that is being social on their own blogs.
Funny how these guys love to talk on Twitter (a platform they don’t own) but won’t take the time to converse with their communities in the spaces (their blog) they took so much time to build.
